How we measure

In Ethiopia, the most common way to use the Tibs Serving Plate is to place hot embers from a fire in the bottom part of the plate to cook or keep its content warm. Alternatively, and the best way to use it indoors is with standard jellied fuel, either by itself, or soaked in a cotton wad.

Be careful when using hot coals! It is not recommended to use indoors with burning embers or charcoal) as it can be dangerous.

Make sure to use the Tibs Serving Plate in a well-ventilated area do not put a hot Tibs Serving Plate directly on top of or around any highly-inflammable surfaces. Avoid placing the Tibs Serving Plate where the wind can spread the ashes to flammable materials.

For your safety, use protective mitts when handling the Tibs Serving Plate.

Do not put the Tibs Serving Plate in a dishwasher, handwash it instead using a mild soap and scrub lightly with a sponge or soft cloth. Don’t use scouring powder or wash with scented dishwashing liquids as the plate can absorb the detergent flavor.

Never use metal utensils, as it can scratch and damage the Tibs Serving Plate; use wooden utensils instead

Clay cookware should be always be cured prior to use so as to seal the micro pores and prevent seepage and hold liquid, however, since the Serving Plate will not contain or cook much liquid, the plate does not need to be cured. If you want to cure it like other Ethiopian Pieces, fill the “plate” portion of the Serving Dish a mixture of water and milk, and place it in a cold oven and slowly bring the temperature to about 250 °F for two hours. After the piece cools, discard the liquid and wash hand wash it with mild soap and water. Finally, rub garlic and olive oil in the plate portion and the plate is now ready to use.
